ABOUT US
African Preschools Society is a Canadian registered charity. (BN85888 0149 RR0001) Since 1997 we have been involved with a rural community named Lilydale B, which borders Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa. Initially, staff of Reservations Africa were involved in bringing school supplies to a makeshift preschool/chreche operating in a shell of a one room Church of the Nazarene. By 2000, it was apparent they needed a school for all the supplies that had been delivered over the last 3 years. The local chief allocated land to us, and all construction workers were hired from the village to build the school. By 2001, we had a basic 10-room school built. Over the years we have continued to make improvements to include running water, electricity, flush toilets, kitchen with industrial appliances and extra classrooms. The same staff of 18 have provided Early Childhood Development for +/-250 preschoolers and follow the South African ECD requirements. Due to the commitment of the staff, our preschool, Mazinyane Pre + Chreche wins awards yearly for being the best preschool/chreche in the province of Mpumalanga.
The charity is extremely proud of the fact that 100% of donations go directly to the project; no travel expenses are paid by the charity.
NEWS
Aug 25
Construction of our beautiful new school was completed this past January. With a complete stoppage of travel during Covid, It took longer to complete and was more costly than anticipated. May 10, Board Chair Marianne Schaubeck, visited Mazinyane Preschool for the official ribbon cutting ceremony. The community was out in full force for the celebrations. (Videos posted on the Media link)
Over the past 25 years, the community has grown exponentially, and the new building is going to serve the community well for many, many years to come. In addition to being a preschool/chreche the community will be able to use the facilities for events and workshops.
We remain cautiously optimistic that the local government will be in a position to take over the day-to-day running of Mazinyane soon. All the staff have been taking courses and upgrading their skills with the hope that this will come to fruition.
In addition to the new school being completed, we are now making all the repairs to the original school as we still need to use the classrooms. After almost 25 years it has served us well but now needs some TLC.
It is our intention to close this charity at the end of 2025, and we want to make sure everything is as pristine and worry free as possible. It will have been almost 25 years since we first opened Mazinyane Preschool, and our hope is that they are well on their way and may they continue to soar.
